summer time.

July 26, 2012

As I type this, it’s stifling hot in my office, and I’m pretty sure my back is glued to the chair with sweat.  Which is fine, because I LOVE it.  I love the heat, I love the sunshine and I love everything about summer.

I know Jack is only 6 months (almost 7) but there are a million things that come flooding back to me, when I see how much he loves laying in the grass, or swinging on the swings in the sunshine.  It’s an overload of nostalgia.  The faint smell of barbecue coming in through our back door from our neighbours grilling, the sticky watermelon juice between your fingers…This is the best summer I’ve had in a long time.

There are so many things I get to do with my kid, that I got to do as a kid.  I can’t even wait for the years to come.  Every time I put him to bed, while it’s still light out and the kids are still playing outside of his window, I get tingles down my spine as I remember it.

Sand on my feet…the smell of Crescent Beach and laughing with Jordie, Emily, Clayton and Jeannie as we played on their dad’s wind surf board in the water.  Climbing the big tree…  Walking up to Kwantlen Pool and stopping at the store on the way home to buy 5 cent candy.  My heart is so full of memories, and every day with sunshine makes me remember it.  The tanned skin, hard feet and popsicle stained clothes of summer.  The 80’s summers…when it was okay to play in your backyard, or out on the street.  Drinking from the hose and taking turns running through the sprinkler.  I had the BEST summers as a kid.  I can’t wait to show Jack what summer is all about.
